FosterED Connection was founded by Charitie Carpenter, who deeply understands the struggles of children in the foster care system. Having entered foster care before the age of 2, Charitie experienced firsthand the challenges and instability that many foster children face. Witnessing how easily children can become lost in the system, she was driven to create a foundation that provides consistent support and advocacy.
FosterED Connection aims to be a steady presence in the lives of these children—a place they can rely on for help during their school years and beyond. This foundation is not just a short-term solution; it is designed to offer lifelong relationships and support, helping foster children successfully navigate high school, transition into adulthood, and build a stable future. For many of these children, it may be the only constant, trusted source of guidance and encouragement they have throughout their lives.
In Washoe County, there are, on average, over 600 children in foster care at any given time. The graduation rate in the Washoe County School District is around 85%. However, foster children face significant educational challenges, with a dropout rate that is 2.5 times higher than the general student population. These statistics highlight the critical need for programs that provide ongoing educational support and life skills training to foster children to help bridge this gap.
